El Diablito
Growing up, I was terrified of demons. Not just the dark—evil itself. I couldn’t fully process that fear as a kid, so I gave it a face. My older brother, trying to "toughen me up," would torment me when the lights went out, using those fears against me.
Now that I’m older, I’m beginning to understand: we’ve all got demons. We all have character flaws. And eventually, we have to face them—sometimes even befriend them.
I’ve come to love Oni artwork. It’s funny, in a full-circle kind of way, considering how terrified I used to be.
Like me, this piece is flawed. It cracked under and around the eyes during the bisque firing. But somehow, even through the imperfections—maybe because of them—it still came out beautiful.
Ceramic sculpture - raku fired, wall mounted, glazed in copper penny.
Dimensions - 11”Hx7”Wx4”D
